VR in Documentary: use of immersive media in non-fiction storytelling

Speaker: Georgy Molodtsov, director and producer (Russia)

Virtual Reality and other immersive formats have gained recognition within the audience of traditional film as well as young computer-oriented people. Immersive media allows a deeper level of interaction with the subject and the possibility to become an active agent of the story rather than the passive viewer. The development of media draws the attention of the major film festivals (IDFA, DOKLeipzig, Sundance, Tribeca, CPH: DOX), especially in the field of documentaries. Within the presentation, Webby Award-winning director and producer Georgy Molodtsov (Interaction alumni 2007) will speak about both the creative and industry side of immersive media, as well as gives ideas for the first steps towards using immersive media for those who want to expand the limits of traditional framed media.

Georgy Molodtsov is a Webby Award-winning director and producer, who started his career as a documentary filmmaker and film festival curator, later moving to VR and Immersive Media. He is a founder of Film XR studio, as well as a longtime collaborator with the French company VRROOM. He is an Interaction 2007 Alumni, as well as a Fulbright graduate fellow with M.A. in Film and Video from American University, USA. Currently, he curates Open Frame VR Lab within goEast Film Festival (Germany).
