My name is Rebotile Medi, currently working in South African broadcasting (SABC), in studio production as director and vision control.

I am the Founding Impact Associate Producer and Head Mentor of Producing at Inter-Creative Mobile Hub – Domestic Filmmaking. My storytelling is bold and rooted in domestic impact filmmaking. Drawing from my domestic family background, from urban life to township stories, I present a distinctive cinematic signature.

Have worked in short films as a producer and assistant director Rwanda Women in Film. There are a lot of challenges that you must always overcome as a woman, because this industry is male dominated. At times it’s hard to do something and get credit for it. Even though I live in Johannesburg, South Africa, where most people say that we are equal and have equal rights, we still have to fight and strive to be recognised.

I have been in the TV and film industry for more than 16 years, but still consider myself to be a learner or consider to be an assistant director. I have worked with Rratsheko Mashilo Nthite in one of his documentaries about Rwanda women. It was a breathtaking experience, listening to the struggles and how they overcame them. How passionate they are about their work and the difficulties that they face. It was a great motivation for me to see the struggles that they were having, but still wanted to succeed and make a great name for themselves. That has given me hope that no matter how long it takes, when you have a plan and a vision you will definitely succeed.

Life is interesting in the dusty roads of Johannesburg. There is sometimes a strike, people blocking roads with burning tyres and putting huge rocks in the middle of the road causing a huge traffic, and sometimes putting the area to a stand still, that’s the city they live in. In my society, I am considered a very independent woman, but being a single parent doesn’t really help. Because I have no choice but to strive to be better and to achieve greatness. I do the best that I can with the time that I have.
