MAJA NOVAKOVIĆ holds an MA in Art History from the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade, and is currently a PhD candidate with a thesis on The Poetics of Heritage in the Work of Sergei Parajanov. She works at the Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Her debut short film, Then Comes the Evening (2019), premiered at Visions du Réel and qualified for the OSCARS® by winning the Full Frame festival. The film has won over 50 awards and has been screened at more than 130 festivals worldwide, including Hot Docs, San Francisco FF, Sarajevo FF, Jihlava IDFF, Camerimage, Busan ISFF, among others. It was nominated for the Cinema Eye Honors and included on the Doc NYC: Short List.  It was also screened at New York’s Metrograph cinema.

Her first feature-length film, At the Door of the House Who Will Come Knocking (2024), won the Grand Prix at Sheffield DocFest, thus qualifying for the OSCARS®.

She is an alumna of Sarajevo Talents and IDFAcademy.
